Polish › Phrases › Yes and No in Polish
The quick answer: tak (tahk) is yes and nie (nyeh) is no — but the word that catches everyone is no (noh), which in ordinary Polish speech means yeah. A Pole answering no to your question is agreeing with you.
Two words, and a trap between them
Tak (tahk) is yes. Nie (nyeh) is no. Learn those and you can answer any question in Polish.
Then there is a third word, and it is the reason this page exists.
🇵🇱 In Polish, no means yes. Not always, and not formally — but in ordinary speech no (noh) is a casual yeah. Ask a Pole whether they want coffee, get no back, and they have said yes. The word for no is nie. Nothing in the spelling warns you, and it catches every single English speaker exactly once.
Every way to agree and refuse, spoken
| Polish | Say it like | What it means | Listen |
|---|---|---|---|
| tak | tahk | Yes. Short, and that is the whole word. | |
| nie | nyeh | No — and also not. One word does both jobs. | |
| no | noh | NOT no. Spoken Polish uses it for yeah — the single most confusing word for visitors. | |
| no tak | noh tahk | Well yes, obviously. Both words meaning yes, stacked. | |
| oczywiście | oh-chih-VEESH-cheh | Of course. The warm, certain yes. | |
| jasne | YAHS-neh | Clear — meaning sure, got it. Very common. | |
| pewnie | PEHV-nyeh | Sure, probably. Slightly softer than tak. | |
| owszem | OHF-shem | Indeed, yes actually. The w hardens to an f before sz. | |
| dokładnie | doh-KWAHD-nyeh | Exactly. Agreeing with a statement rather than a request. | |
| nie ma mowy | nyeh mah MOH-vih | No way. Literally “there is no speech”. | |
| wcale nie | FTSAH-leh nyeh | Not at all. The w hardens again. | |
| chyba nie | HIH-bah nyeh | Probably not. ch is an h, never a k. | |
| raczej nie | RAH-chey nyeh | Rather not. | |
| no właśnie | noh VWAHSH-nyeh | Exactly that. ł is a w, so this is vwash-nyeh. |
Nie does two jobs
Nie is no, the answer. It is also not, the negator inside a sentence. English uses two different words; Polish uses one.
Nie. — No.
Nie wiem. — I don’t know.
To nie jest moje. — That is not mine.
Which means the word you hear most often in Polish conversation is not a refusal at all — it is doing grammar.
Saying these out loud
nie is one syllable. nyeh. In Polish an i after a consonant softens that consonant rather than becoming its own vowel.
ch is an h. Chyba nie is HIH-bah nyeh — never a k, never the German throaty sound. More on our Polish sounds page.
w hardens to an f before a voiceless consonant. Owszem is OHF-shem and wcale nie is FTSAH-leh nyeh. The spelling never changes; the sound does.
ł is a w. No właśnie is noh VWAHSH-nyeh — see the Polish alphabet for all nine extra letters.
